Memoryhouse, the future of music
Evan Abeele is a musician who takes his inspiration as a student of the neo-classical and modernist modes of the past century. Denise Nouvion is a photographer-videographer who focuses on the blurred boundaries of the moment, of memory, and of what will manifest. With a shared common aesthetic to their creative output, it was only natural for these Ontario artists to collaborate. Their music seeks to render this blending of the contemporary with the forgotten, the traditional and the technological, the visual and the aural, within the sonographic landscapes of pop music.

The duo’s discography consists of two 7” singles, “Lately (Deuxieme)” b/w “Lately (Teengirl Fantasy Natural Mix)” on Inflated Records and the “Caregiver” b/w “Heirloom” single on Suicide Squeeze Records, and a self-released, digital-only EP entitled, The Years which was released in February 2010. The Years earned praise from Stereogum, AOL Spinner, The Line of Best Fit, and Pitchfork, among others. And Pitchfork had this to say about the original release: “…the EP clearly sets Abeele and Nouvion apart from their more amateur peers. The Years may be awash in nostalgia, but far from inviting unfavorable comparisons, it mostly confirms that the past was indeed as good as you remember.”

On September 13, 2011 Sub Pop Records will release a fully re-recorded, remixed and re-mastered version of The Years, adding two new tracks entitled “Modern, Normal” and “Quiet America.” The Years was re-recorded and mixed by Evan Abeele with the help of Daniel Gray in Toronto. While technically an expanded and improved reissue, this version of The Years will be the first time the EP has been made available on CD or LP. This is exciting. Also exciting: with the release of The Years, the band will be touring in the US and will play at the 2011 CMJ Music Marathon festival in October.

Memoryhouse The Years[Sub Pop, 2011 Reissue]
I don’t think I ever really fell in love with Memoryhouse until I heard their cover of My Bloody Valentine’s “When You Sleep.”  After hearing that, I quickly relistened to everything else they had released.  Their debut EP, The Years soon ended up being one of my favorite EPs of last year and Memoryhouse stuck as one of the very few chillwave bands I would keep an eye on.  With various singles and oddities released since The Years, 2011 finds their first release of the year being a reissue of the same debut that launched the band into blogosphere stardom.  It seems somewhat unnecessary to reissue something so soon, but with two new songs and rerecorded versions of previous songs, Sub Pop’s release of The Years proves to be a worthy reissue and a good look at how Memoryhouse’s sound has evolved.
Something that’s clear when listening to this “new” EP is that Denise Nouvion has undoubtedly become a better singer.  And with the mixing and production at a much higher value, each song is all the more alluring.  The band plays around with their instruments a lot more this time too.  Layers of synths are added on to original recordings and give a much fuller and enveloping sound on tracks like “Sleep Patterns.”  On “To the Lighthouse,” Abeele doesn’t stick with playing the vocal melody on his guitar but branches out and gets a little more creative with his instrumentation.  Real drums are added as well and make the song feel less synthetic in comparison to the original, testifying to the slightly altered sound that the duo is going for here.  With the exclusion of “The Waves” on the EP, this reissue finds Memoryhouse drifting from their chillwave label and focusing on a more ambient and natural sound.  “Lately” shows this change as well as it essentially follows the slower “(Troisieme)” version that was released as a single last year.
The new tracks are indications of the band’s new desired sound as well.  “Modern, Normal” houses a slow tempo, acoustic drums, and fragmented audio snippets that all make way for Denise’s vocals to shine.  “Quiet America” finds Denise at her most intimate and honest, as she sings over heavily reverbed piano and static.  Last Year’s Choir Of Empty Rooms hinted at the more ambient approach that the band was going for and after hearing this reissue, it seems that Memoryhouse has finally found their sound.  If you’re hesitant in getting this reissue, don’t be.  Not only is it a good bridge between the band’s older material and what’s to come, it’s undeniably better than the original, Arcade Sound release.
